Relative pitch vs perfect pitch
Perfect pitch names notes with no reference. Relative pitch hears the distances. Only one of them is reliably trainable, and it is the more useful one.
Two different abilities get discussed as if they were the same skill at different levels. They are not.
Perfect pitch (absolute pitch) is naming a note with no reference — hearing a car horn and knowing it is an F♯.
Relative pitch is identifying the distance between notes. Given a reference, you can name what follows, or sing a requested interval from it.
Which one is trainable
Perfect pitch appears to depend heavily on early-childhood exposure, and attempts to train it in adults have produced limited and inconsistent results. It is also much more common among speakers of tonal languages and among people who began musical training very young — both consistent with a developmental window.
Relative pitch is trainable at any age, by anyone, and improves fairly predictably with regular practice. There is no serious dispute about this.
If you are an adult wanting to improve your ear, relative pitch is the answer.
Which one is more useful
Relative pitch, comfortably — and this surprises people.
Music is built from relationships. A melody is a shape of intervals: it is the same melody transposed, which is precisely why transposition works at all. A chord progression is a pattern of movements between roots. Relative pitch reads those relationships directly.
Perfect pitch names individual notes, which is a labelling ability. It is genuinely useful — for tuning without a reference, for transcribing quickly, for knowing instantly what key something is in. But a musician with excellent relative pitch and no perfect pitch is not missing anything structural.
Some people with perfect pitch report it as an active nuisance: music played at a different tuning standard, or transposing instruments, can feel wrong in a way that gets in the way.
What relative pitch actually consists of
- Intervals — the distance between two notes. The foundation.
- Chord quality — major, minor, diminished, dominant. See chord ear training.
- Scale degrees — hearing a note's function within a key, which is what functional ear training drills.
- Progressions — recognising a I–V–vi–IV by sound.
Most people find degrees and progressions transfer to real music faster than isolated intervals do, which is why functional approaches have become popular. Both work; doing some of each is sensible.
