Music examinations
Music theory exams: choose a pathway
Start with what you need the qualification for. These five systems assess different combinations of musical knowledge, writing and listening; matching grade numbers do not make them equivalent.
Sources checked . Confirm local rules before booking.
What a theory exam tells you
A music theory examination assesses how you understand and use the language of music: notation, rhythm, keys, intervals, chords and, depending on the syllabus, harmony, listening or composition. A practical examination assesses playing or singing. Studying theory can support performance, but a theory certificate is a separate achievement from an instrumental grade.
Students take exams for a clear learning goal, feedback, a certificate, progression within an examination program, or possible educational credit. Parents and teachers may use the syllabus to organise lessons; adult learners can use it to identify gaps. You can also learn these skills without entering an exam.
Before choosing, write down the outcome you want: “qualify for my next practical exam”, “complete my certificate”, “prepare for a music degree”, or “structure my learning”. Those are different decisions.
Compare the five systems
The comparison below describes pathways, not equivalent levels. Availability depends on country, grade and exam type. Follow each guide for the official rules and booking links.
Find a relevant pathway
Explore by purpose and documented examination language. These matches explain relevance; they do not confirm your eligibility, a local booking, equivalent grades or university credit.
Language matches always carry format and regional conditions. Unconfirmed languages are not offered as exam options. Check local registration before booking; a language match does not confirm availability in your country.

- Theory additional requirements apply to specified higher Comprehensive/Repertoire practical certificates.
AP Music Theory →
- Educational purpose

- AP is a course/exam rather than a graded instrumental pathway.
The ABRSM specification, Trinity subject guidance, RCM certificate requirements, AMEB NSW requirements and College Board exam guide explain these distinctions in more detail.
Choose by your goal
Progressing to ABRSM Practical or Performance Grade 6, 7 or 8? Check the receiving board's accepted prerequisites before booking. Our ABRSM Grade 5 guide explains this common route and its alternatives.
Completing an RCM or AMEB practical certificate? Look up the precise certificate and theory requirement together. A co-requisite is a requirement for completing an award; it is not necessarily a rule that you must pass theory before sitting the practical exam.
Taking AP through school? Start with your teacher and AP coordinator. You will need sustained listening, dictation and singing practice alongside written theory. An otherwise strong graded-theory student may still need to develop those response skills.
Learning independently? Check which board has suitable local administration, materials and teacher support. Try the official sample material before paying an entry fee. Choose a level from its actual syllabus, rather than your age, years of instrumental lessons or a grade number from another board.
Applying to university? Read the admissions and recognition guide before choosing a certificate for that purpose. A named course may have its own entrance or placement test even when it values your exam background.
Formats change how you prepare
Reading a score, entering notation on a computer, writing harmony by hand, transcribing an audio passage and recording a sung melody are different tasks. Learn the concepts first, then practise the response method used by your exam. A general multiple-choice quiz cannot stand in for all of them.
Terminology varies too. A British crotchet is an American quarter note; a minim is a half note, a semibreve a whole note and a quaver an eighth note. “Bar” and “measure” describe the same unit. Our board guides use the terminology relevant to that pathway; the published syllabus decides which answers are accepted.
Check logistics before paying
Confirm the exact grade or level, syllabus version, country, format, entry deadline, required equipment, identity checks and access arrangements. For online exams, “on demand” can still include a completion window after purchase. For school exams, the ordering deadline can be much earlier than the exam itself.
There is no single worldwide price for any of these pathways. The guides link to official booking and fee information so you can check the correct currency, administration year and local charges. This section does not sell exam entries or represent the examination boards.
Turn the syllabus into practice
Use a topic checklist with three columns: “understand”, “can answer without help” and “can apply in mixed questions”. Start with reading the staff, note values, key signatures and intervals where needed. Then work through your board's official sample tasks.
Tomus lessons and tools can explain and reinforce individual skills. They are not a complete examination course or a substitute for official syllabus coverage, written feedback, dictation practice or sight-singing assessment.
