Why the same key moves between clefs

A staff on its own has no notes — five lines and four spaces, and nothing to say which pitch any of them is. The clef fixes one line and everything else is counted from it. The treble clef curls around the second line from the bottom and makes it G above middle C; the bass clef’s two dots sit either side of the fourth line and make it F below middle C.

So the note on the bottom line of the treble staff is E, while the bottom line of the bass staff is G. Middle C sits on a short ledger line of its own — just below the treble staff and just above the bass staff — which is the easiest way to see that the two staves are one continuous ladder of notes split in the middle.

Sharps and flats

Each black key has two names. F♯ is written on the F line with a sharp sign; G♭ on the G space with a flat. Both are the same key on the piano. This finder writes the black keys as sharps; which spelling a piece uses depends on its key — see enharmonic notes.

Learning to read faster

Reading notes quickly comes from a few anchors rather than counting up from the bottom every time: middle C, the treble G line and the bass F line.
