- Duration
- In person: Level 5 is 1 hour; Levels 6–8 are 2 hours. Online final/standalone exam: 1 hour in one sitting.Official source ↗

- Exam questions
- The Online Theory Exam for Levels 5–8 is offered in English and French. Language provision for individual advanced subjects and in-person sessions should be confirmed during registration. Official source ↗
- Answers
- Use the chosen exam version and its notation/terminology requirements. A separate permission to answer in Spanish or Russian was not confirmed. Official source ↗
- Instructions
- Official exam demonstrations are available in English and French. Verify the purchased product's setup guidance before starting. Official source ↗
- Preparation
- The standalone exam and Study Guide with Exam are different products. A French exam does not establish that all accompanying teaching content is in French. Official source ↗
- Spanish and Russian
- Neither a Spanish nor a Russian examination option was confirmed in the official material reviewed. English/French provision should not be expanded into an unsupported language list. Official source ↗
Certificate language was not confirmed in the sources reviewed. Ask the provider if you need a translated certificate. Studying through another language does not change exam-question or permitted-answer rules. You need to understand the chosen exam language and its musical terms; do not assume this is a separate English-proficiency qualification.
Booking, retakes, access arrangements and certificate policies
- Book and pay
- Register in MyRCM. Standalone online access lasts 120 days; Study Guide with Exam lasts one year. In-person sessions have regional deadlines. Canadian and US fees/currencies differ. Official source ↗
- Retakes
- RCM permits re-registration and retaking an examination. Check current fees and product conditions; an exam purchase is not an unlimited-attempt course. Official source ↗
- Access and changes
- Use RCM's current accessibility and examination policies before entry; ask how an adjustment applies to the online product. Confirm rescheduling/cancellation terms for the selected sitting. Official source ↗
- Certificate and timing
- Do not confuse certificate expiry with deadlines for combining components. The published policies specify theory co-requisite timing for Level 10/ARCT, including a five-year condition. That is not a universal expiry date for all RCM certificates. Official source ↗
Your next steps
- Identify the certificate and its theory/practical components.
- Choose language and online/in-person product before paying.
- Study the level-specific requirements, including written work and history where required.
The Royal Conservatory pathway
The Royal Conservatory of Music, based in Canada, offers the Certificate Program with practical and theoretical study. This guide is especially relevant to candidates in Canada and the United States. It is a different organisation from London's Royal College of Music.
Theory learning begins before the first formal theory examination. The core Theory exams are Levels 5–8; more advanced requirements include harmony, history, counterpoint and analysis. Consult the official syllabus and errata index, including the Theory Syllabus, 2016 Edition and its addenda, for the exact requirements. A syllabus can remain current despite an older edition date.
Theory and comprehensive certificates
RCM's US certificate requirements list a practical examination plus the corresponding theory requirement for comprehensive certificates at Levels 5–8. A theory certificate records theory achievement; a comprehensive certificate combines the required components of the program.
At higher levels, additional subjects matter. For example, the listed Level 9 comprehensive requirements include Level 8 Theory, Level 9 History, and Level 9 Harmony or Keyboard Harmony alongside the practical examination. Do not assume that one theory pass completes every higher certificate. Check the syllabus for your instrument, certificate and region, including any rules about timing or accepted substitutions.
Plan theory alongside practical study rather than waiting until a certificate is due. Completing a practical exam and completing the award's requirements can be different milestones. If transferring from another board, ask RCM about its current transfer-credit process; the same grade number is not evidence of equivalence.
Build the components of an RCM award
Foundations
Preparatory–Level 4 build theory understanding before the core theory examinations.
Theory Levels 5–8 + practical
Meet the named components for a comprehensive certificate; a theory-only certificate records a different achievement.
Advanced pathway
Higher levels add the required harmony, history, counterpoint or analysis. Check the precise award's component deadlines.
Online and in-person options
The RCM Theory exam overview describes in-person Levels 5–8 and digital alternatives. The online products include an Exam Only option and a Study Guide with Exam option. Those are different purchases with different learning support and access windows.
The current overview lists 120 days from purchase for the online Exam Only option and one year for the Study Guide with Exam. Online and in-person sittings also have different timing arrangements. Verify the exact product before paying rather than applying an in-person duration to an online exam. Online access is not permission to pause an exam indefinitely after starting it.
For an in-person session, use the Canada dates or US dates and the corresponding examination-centre information. Registration goes through MyRCM. “Remote” does not mean every advanced theory subject uses the same platform or assessment method as Levels 5–8.
Preparation by skill
Start with the grade's syllabus, identify what you can already do unaided, and use that to choose material. Work through pitch and notation, rhythm and meter, scales and key signatures, intervals, and chords and harmony at the depth specified. Include analysis, terminology and any historical or written work your level requires.
Here is the progression in the official Theory syllabus, read with the current addenda:
| Level | Important extensions | Written and contextual work |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Major/minor keys through four sharps/flats; primary triads and dominant sevenths | Complete a four-measure answer phrase; identify phrase relationships and study the specified vocal music |
| 6 | All major/minor keys; augmented/diminished intervals; compound metre; cadences | Build a question–answer phrase pair and relate concepts to Baroque/Classical examples |
| 7 | Wider transposition, irregular rhythmic groups, chromatic/whole-tone/octatonic/pentatonic/blues scales, seventh-chord inversions | Compose a contrasting period and work with Romantic/Modern examples |
| 8 | Alto/tenor clefs, orchestral transposition, modes, compound intervals through a fifteenth and broader harmony | Handle short/open scores, compose in major/minor, and study Medieval/Renaissance and global music examples |
The requirements are cumulative. History and musical context are part of this pathway, not optional extras added after notation. Follow the precise listening works and task limits in the syllabus/addenda rather than treating this overview as the full prescribed list. The timing printed in the syllabus describes its in-person format; online product rules are separate.
RCM's official resources include the Celebrate Theory series, online study materials, practice assessments and examination papers. Use the examinations hub to find the current resources and regional shop. A self-marked answer should lead to a correction and an explanation, not just a score.
RCM materials commonly use North American note names: quarter note, half note and eighth note. If you have studied with British materials, these correspond to crotchet, minim and quaver. Keep the underlying rhythmic value clear as you change vocabulary.
Fees, entry and recognition
Before registering, confirm your RCM candidate details, correct level, exam product, region, access arrangements and session deadline. Use the official Canada fee table or US fee table: CAD and USD entries are not interchangeable, and course bundles may cost differently from an exam-only entry. This guide does not quote a universal fee or promise a particular available session.
RCM certificates may be useful evidence of musical study. A university, school system or other receiving organisation decides whether a qualification meets its own requirements. Secondary-school recognition is also a separate question from university credit. See our admissions and placement guide before relying on a certificate for entry or exemptions.
Use Tomus to revisit individual concepts, then return to RCM's actual tasks. General learning exercises do not establish a complete RCM syllabus match, and the number of learners using RCM programs is not an annual theory examination candidate count.
